How to Move Your Podcast Website from WordPress

To move a podcast website from WordPress to OnPodium, find your podcast's RSS feed (your host's feed, or the feed your WordPress podcast plugin makes), paste it into OnPodium, pick a template, then point your domain to OnPodium.

Before you start: find out where your audio lives

A WordPress podcast is set up in one of two ways, and the steps depend on which one you have.

  • Your audio is at a podcast host, such as Buzzsprout, Libsyn or Captivate. Your RSS feed comes from that host. This is the simple case: the host keeps your audio and OnPodium reads the host's feed.
  • Your audio is on your WordPress site, and a plugin such as PowerPress makes the feed. That feed often ends in /feed/podcast/. Your audio files and your feed then depend on your WordPress site.

Step by step: move from WordPress

  1. Find your RSS feed address: in your host's dashboard, or in your podcast plugin's settings.
  2. Create your OnPodium site. Start a free trial at dashboard.onpodium.com and paste the feed. OnPodium imports every episode.
  3. Pick a template and add your logo, colours and fonts.
  4. Copy what you wrote by hand. Your About text, contact details and the blog posts you want to keep do not move by themselves. The blog and custom pages are on the Pro and Pro+ plans.
  5. Check the site on its free onpodium.com address.
  6. Point your domain to OnPodium. In the OnPodium dashboard, add your domain. The dashboard shows the DNS records to set at your domain registrar and checks them for you. When they are in place, OnPodium sets up https. DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to reach everyone.

If your audio is on your WordPress site

Do not shut down WordPress while it still stores your audio and makes your feed. If it goes offline, the podcast apps cannot get your episodes. You have two options:

  • Keep WordPress running on another address and keep using its feed, or
  • Move your hosting. On the Pro+ plan, import your show into OnPodium, which copies your audio. Then redirect your old WordPress feed to your new OnPodium feed address with a permanent (301) redirect, so the podcast apps follow.

Keep WordPress for the rest of your site

If your WordPress site does more than the podcast, keep it and put the podcast website on a subdomain, such as podcast.yourdomain.com. Then link to it from your main menu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my old blog post addresses still work?

Not by themselves. Addresses on OnPodium may differ from your WordPress addresses, and OnPodium does not redirect old addresses. Update your most important links.

Can I keep my domain?

Yes. Point the domain or a subdomain to OnPodium and it sets up https.

Do I need a podcast host?

You need an RSS feed. It can come from a host, from your WordPress plugin while WordPress keeps running, or from OnPodium hosting on the Pro+ plan.
